Doris Thompson Rhoten, 84, of Camarillo, CA, passed away, Thursday, August 3, 2017 at AlmaVia Assisted Living.
Doris Margaret Johnson was born September 2, 1932 in Foster County, North Dakota to Artie and Angeline (Hockert) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. She graduated from Glenfield High School and received her teacher’s certificate from Valley City State Teacher’s College. She enjoyed teaching grades 1-8 in a country school outside McHenry, ND.
In 1951, she married Perry Thompson in McHenry, ND. After Perry finished his military obligations, they made their home in Tioga, ND where they owned and operated Thompson Electric and Sporting Goods. Here they raised their three children; Monica, Gregory, and Robert.
Perry was tragically killed in an accident in 1968. Doris made the brave move to relocate her family in 1970 to California. There she worked her way up to a supervisory position with the Ventura County Hospital
On Christmas Eve, 1977, she married Ernest Rhoten in Ventura, California. They traveled the world together as he managed engineering projects in Iran, Bangladesh, and Saudi Arabia, to name a few. Their sabbaticals took them throughout Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East. If there was a golf course to be found on their journey, they were going to find it.
After Ernie’s retirement, they built a beautiful home on a golf course in Arizona. After twelve years, they chose to relocate back to California. They moved to Camarillo in 2013 where she resided until her death.
Doris will be remembered for her gifted culinary skills. Friends and family always looked forward to her tasty meals and especially her home-made caramel rolls. She was an avid and competitive golfer and you would generally see her name in the championship flight. She also enjoyed playing cards and taking long walks with Ernie.
Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, Perry; parents Artie and Angeline Johnson; sister MaryAnn, brother Marvin, and great-grandson, Tanner Garman.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest; daughter Monica (David) Hartsoch and grandson Klint (Tina); son Gregory (Sandra) and grandsons Dakota and Dylan; and son Robert (Cindy) and granddaughters Kelsey and Kara. Two great-grandchildren; Skylar and Karter Hartsoch. Sister Gloria Eberhardt; brother Dwight (Hilde) Johnson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
At this time, services and arrangements are pending.
