Robert Barkie, 87, of rural Williston, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 4, 2017 due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Robert was born on May 15th, 1930 to Aesoph and Hazel (Seeb) Barkie in Bonetraill Township. He grew up on their family farmstead North West of town and attended school until the 8th grade. Robert spent his childhood and younger adulthood farming side by side with his father.
Robert enlisted in the Army in 1951 and was called back home by his father to continue farming. He loved being on the tractor and in the fields. His lifelong passion was truly the farm and that is what he loved to do!!
Unbeknownst to him, through family gatherings in Canada his parents set eyes on his future bride to be. He met Evelyn Abdilnour in 1955 in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan and later moved to Detroit, Michigan to pursue a career in the Ford automotive industry. He “chased” Evelyn, as she would say, but he would say the opposite. Either way, they developed a loving relationship which lead to their marriage on January 6th, 1957 and six beautiful children were born.
Robert was employed at Creighton Motors as a service writer and mechanic for several years. In 1971, he and Evelyn purchased the Viking Restaurant and Lounge providing the community with many years of enjoyment to include Lebanese Cuisine, the best caramel rolls in town, live entertainment and numerous friendships.
Robert was later employed by the Williams County Highway Department moving his way up to a blade operator and continued his dedicated service for over twenty years until his retirement.
Robert was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Odd Fellows Club and the Elks Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He was widowed on Sept 14th, 1990 and devoted his life to his children and grandchildren. Everything he did from that time forward was for his family. He was a man of honor, integrity, and honesty. He always was full of jokes, smiles, and had a witty response when visiting with everyone. He was known in town for the best hugs and touched many lives with his infectious personality. He was loved by many and he loved with all his heart and soul.
Robert was preceded in death by his two grandchildren, Michael and Matthew (Barkie) Taylor; brothers, David and Leonard; sister, Ann Marie Barkie; wife, Evelyn (Abdilnour) Barkie; daughter, Ann Marie Barkie; and son in law, Rick Cox.
He is survived by his son, Daniel; granddaughters Brandy and Jessica; daughters, HazelAnn (Barkie) Cox, Jacqueline, Rose (John) Reynolds; grandsons Nicholas and Cody, granddaughter Evie; Sandra (Rick) Odegard, grandsons Tyler and Trevor; sisters, MaryAnn (Merle) Lund, Louise (Dwane) Lind and many relatives, cousins, nieces and nephews.
