Joseph Barkie, 99, of Williston, passed away at his home on Saturday afternoon, November 18, 2017.
Joseph (Joe) Barkie was born on February 17, 1918 in Bull Butte Township, Williams County, North Dakota to George and Mary (Shaheen) Barkie. He was the ninth child and was raised and attended schools in the community.
On March 27, 1937 he was united in marriage to Edna Albert. To this union Joe’s seven children were born. This marriage later ended in divorce. Joe moved to Williston and on December 26, 1968 he was united in marriage to Lyla Wells.
Joe spent most of his life farming. When he moved to Williston, he worked at various jobs including the City of Williston and helping neighbors around their farms with fencing and anything else that needed to get done.
Joe enjoyed playing horseshoes and cards, but he really loved visiting with family and friends.
Surviving Joe are his daughters, Joan Nelson of Glasgow, MT, Donna (John) Martinez of Williston, Delorise (Gary) Lund of Yakima, WA, Deha Barkie of Kent, WA, Jeannie (Bob) Smith of Lakewood, WA, and Janice (Dusty) Shaldt of Kenmore, WA; one son, Joey (Shirley) Barkie of Williston; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Preceding Joe in death were his parents; wife, Lila; brothers, Aesoph, Mike, Alfred, Wilbur, Edward, Charles and Sammy; and sisters, Effie, Rose and Ramsey.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning, November 25, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Williston, ND. Father Russel Kovash will officiate.
An Evening Vigil with a Rosary will be held Friday evening, November 24, at 7:00 PM at the Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home Chapel in Williston.
Friends may call at Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home on Friday, November 24, from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM and for the hour preceding the service at the church on Saturday.
Interment in Riverview Cemetery will follow the service.
