Donavon Quarne, 85, of Grenora, North Dakota, passed away Wednesday evening, November 29, 2017, at the Bethel Lutheran Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Williston, North Dakota.
Donavon Peter Quarne was born May 11, 1932 in Grenora, North Dakota to Oscar Quarne, Sr. and Anna (Jensen) Quarne. He was educated in Grenora schools and graduated from high school in 1950.
On December 29, 2008 he married Thelma Cunningham Penner in Williston, ND after a long courtship. Thelma said he was a bit reluctant to marry after being a bachelor for so long, but found marriage a cure for his loneliness.
He was a farmer/rancher and loved talking farming and machinery long after his retirement.
He was especially interested in a few groups he belonged to, the Grenora American Legion Post, The St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Grenora, and the Senior Citizens group. He was always willing to contribute to any of their endeavors.
He was an inveterate collector, if it was collectible, he probably had a collection. Things like tractors, coins, signs, pedal tractors, comic books, sports cards, all interested him.
In high school he was a valued basketball team member, he was 6” 5” tall. There was nothing he liked better than a game of rummy-cube with Thelma or some pinochle with his brothers and sister. A good civil argument with friends was also one of his favorite challenges. He loved having his brothers and sisters together and the responsibility he felt for his “little” brother lasted his whole life.
Surviving Donavon are his wife, Thelma of Grenora; sister, Betty Sorensen of Dagmar, MT; brothers, Oscar Jr. of Williston, Edwin of Grenora, and Erwin and his wife Lorna of Grenora; Thelma’s children Butch, Mike and Brenda; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Donavon in death were his parents, Oscar and Anna Quarne; one sister, Irma Helgeland and one brother, Harley Quarne and one step-son, Bruce Penner.
