Elmer Herdt, 86, our beloved husband, father, brother and grandpa of Williston, formerly of Fairview, passed away Friday afternoon, August 31, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center in Williston, North Dakota..
Elmer was born April 23, 1926 in Max, North Dakota to parents, Reinhold and Mary (Hoffman) Herdt. He was raised and educated in the Max area. In 1940, the Herdt family moved to the Nohle, MT area, where Elmer started his farming career with his father.
November 29, 1946 Elmer and Gladys (Vicha) Herdt were united in marriage in Sidney, Montana. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Jerry Herdt, Rhonda (James) Hunter, and Vickie (Mark) Wagner.
In 1963, Elmer and Gladys bought the family farm from his parents. He was passionate about farming and loved the outdoors. His favorite activities included playing cards, welding, participating in tractor pulls, being with family and friends, and visiting with neighbors. Elmer especially loved wheeling and dealing on farm machinery.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview, where he served on the board for several years. He loved God and his family.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Williston, ND; two daughters, Rhonda (James) Hunter of Fairview, MT, and Vickie (Mark) Wagner of Billings, MT; nine granddaughters, Jeri Lynn (Jon) DeVries, Stephanie (Shane) Johnston, Sandra Herdt, Jennifer Herdt, Michele (Andy) Butler, Colette Schmidt, Gail (Corey) Dutcher, Kayla (Josh) Squires, and Kara Wagner; ten great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters; four sisters, Frances Cayko, Genella Haugen, Judeen (James) Berry, and Charleen (Bob) Aas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Reinhold and Mary; and his son, Jerry; and two brothers-in-law, Nick Cayko and Dag Haugen.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to Zion Lutheran Church at 309 South Central Avenue in Fairview, Montana 59221.

His funeral will be celebrated Friday afternoon, September 7, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. (MDT) at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview, Montana. Pastor Roberta Pierce will officiate.
A family service open to friends and family will be held Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. (CDT) at the Everson Memorial Chapel in Williston.

Friends may call at the Everson Funeral Home of Williston on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. (CDT) and at the church on Friday for the hour preceding the funeral service.

Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.
