Ernest Raymond Rhoten, 81, passed away in Camarillo, California on Thursday, August 14, 2017 eleven days after his beloved wife, Doris.

Ernest Raymond Rhoten was born April 24, 1936 in Burbank, South Dakota to Raymond and Doris (Hallstrom) Rhoten. The family moved to Coleridge, Nebraska where Ernie went to school. After graduation in 1954, Ernie began his college career at Ventura College where he played for the baseball team. Shortly thereafter, he joined the US Army and was stationed at White Sands Missile Station. After filling his military obligations, he returned to school at Fresno State earning a degree in civil engineering. He started his engineering career with the City of Ventura and later as an engineer for PG&E in Dinky Creek, Ca.

On Christmas Eve, 1977, he married Doris Thompson in Ventura, California. They traveled the world together as he managed engineering projects in Iran, Bangladesh, Sudan, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Their sabbaticals took them throughout Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East. If there was a golf course to be found on their journeys, they were sure to find it.

After Ernie’s retirement, they built a beautiful home on a golf course in Arizona. After twelve years, they chose to relocate back to California – again, on a golf course. They moved to Camarillo in 2013 where he resided until his death.

Ernie was a well-respected engineer and was brought out of retirement more than once. Everything he did, he did with perfection. That included being a loving husband and devoted father. So devoted, that he adopted Doris’ three children as adults so that he could be dad and not step-dad. He lived life to the fullest and you would often hear “this is living” when he was enjoying a round of golf, eating a fine meal, playing with the grandchildren, riding horse on the Hartsoch Ranch or in the field on a tractor. He was always generous with his time and willing to help family and friends.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Doris Rhoten; brother, Norman Rhoten and great-grandson, Tanner Garman.

Ernie is survived by his daughter, Monica (David) Hartsoch and grandson Klint (Tina); son, Gregory (Sandra) Thompson and grandsons, Dakota and Dylan; and son, Robert (Cindy) Thompson and granddaughters, Kelsey and Kara, two great-grandchildren; Skylar and Karter Hartsoch; brother, Daniel (Sherry) Rhoten and sister, Wynona (David) Rowe; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
