Louis “Curly” Hinderer, 93, of Tioga, North Dakota, formerly of Williston, North Dakota, passed away Saturday afternoon, November 11, 2017 at the Tioga Medical Center Long Term Care, in Tioga.

Louis Albert Hinderer was born October 14, 1924 in Ihlen, Minnesota to Ferdinand (Fred) and Nonnie (Griffith) Hinderer. Curly was raised and educated through the 7th grade in Williston, North Dakota. He then worked in his father’s businesses and was a telegraph messenger.

Curly served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II from January of 1943 until December of 1945. He served with the HQ 348th Fighter Group as a radar operator.

On February 14, 1947 Curly married Fae Louise Nice in Sidney Montana. Fae passed away in 1978. He was united in marriage to Darlene Nice Hollis on November 14, 1979 in Canoga Park California.

After his military service, Curly worked for the Great Northern Railroad, State Highway Department as a mechanic and then the United States Postal Office as a Letter Carrier until his retirement.

He was a member of the American Legion where he was actively involved in cooking for several Legion events and driving for the conventions. In 2011, at the age of 87, Louis went on the WWII Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Curly was also a member Drum and Bugle Corp as a flag bearer, V.F.W. and the Moose Club.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, water skiing, cooking for the chili contests, bowling, traveling with his wife and playing cards and cribbage with family and friends. Feeding the birds and growing tomatoes was a friendly competition with his neighbor Ginger Snyder.

Louis spent nearly all of his life in Williston. At the height of the oil boom, his apartment building was sold. He and his wife then moved to the Tioga Medical Center Independent Living until his declining health forced him to move to the Tioga Medical Center Long Term Care, where he resided for the last three years.

Curly is survived by his wife, Darlene Hinderer; children, Dennis Hinderer, Daryl Hinderer and Corinne (Timothy) Coughlin; stepsons, Robert (Teri) Hollis, Bennett (Mary) Hollis and Brian Hollis; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty one great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Fae Hinderer; stepdaughter, Kathleen Hollis; his father, Fred Hinderer and his mother, Nonnie Hinderer Brown; stepmothers, Marie Holtz Hinderer and Myrtle White Hinderer; brother, Harold Hinderer; sisters, Madaline Hinderer Stormo and Marie Hinderer Dreier Thoring; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Stormo, Hank Dreier, Morris Thoring, Perry Nice, Duane Nice, Larry Nice and Donald Nice; sisters-in-law, Virginia Goeson, Geri Nice, Shirley Nice and Ollie Willis; daughter-in-law, Janet Hinderer; nephews, Dale Nice, Danny Nice and Scott Nice; niece, Patty Thoring.


 

Services

His Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 16, at the Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Brian Knutson will officiate.

Visitation

Friends may call at Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM and on Thursday from 9:00 AM until service time.

Cemetery

Interment with Military rites will be in Hillside Memory Gardens following the funeral service.
