A Graveside Service celebrating Cleo’s life will be held Friday, June 22, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the Riverview Cemetery in Williston. Rev. Brian Knutson will officiate.

Cleo Schmitz, 96, of Prosper, Texas, formerly of Williston, North Dakota passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Prosper, Texas.

Cleo B. Schmitz, 96, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother died Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at her daughter’s home of complications from Lymphoma. Cleo was in hospice care for three months and died peacefully in her sleep. She will be missed by all.

She is being remembered by her brother Larry Mockel and his wife Carol, her sister Marlene Roberts and her husband Fred, and cousin Marion “sister” Hughes; four children, Gary Michael and wife Peggy, James Richard and Denise, all of Williston, Thomas Patrick and wife Brenda of Gillette, WY., and Jennifer Lynn Dafft and husband Scott of Prosper, Texas; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Olga (Hauglum) Rice Mockel and William Rice, her husband Norbert Schmitz, her brother Richard (Dicky) Mockel, her beloved grandson Josh Lawrence Schmitz, her niece Julie (Mockel) Larson and her nephew David Everson.

She was born December 16, 1921 at her grandparents’ home in Hebron Township, west of Williston. She received her name from her grandparents, Carl and Betsy Hauglum. She was raised on her grandparents farm and attended school through 8th grade before she moved to Williston. Her father, William Rice, died before she was born. Cleo married Norbert Schmitz in Plentywood, MT on June 28, 1943. They established their home in Williston where she remained after his passing in 1978 and before her move to Texas. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Williston Chapter 252 Women of the Moose.

Cleo was currently living in Prosper, Texas with her daughter and son-in-law after a courageous battle from colon cancer in 2013. Other than listening to old country western music, she pursued her hobbies with a passion. Her favorite hobbies included gardening and crossword puzzles. She especially enjoyed competing with her neighbors to see who could complete the word puzzle from the daily newspaper. After retiring, she traveled and went on cruises with her friends, but, nothing made her happier than her neighborhood comradery and the coffee clutch gang that she hosted daily.
